Winter Fishing In Fiordland

There are still lots of great fishing opportunities on offer in and around Fiordland from June to September. All of Fiordland’s lakes remain open to fishing throughout the year and there are still several remote rivers and streams that remain open to fishing during the shorter days of winter

Our most popular fishing option is a fun jet boat tour down 10kms of the mighty Waiau river to Lake Manapouri. We can fish the mouth of the main river where it meets the lake and we also fish around the lake shore, targeting spots where creeks and streams enter the lake. During the winter months, trout will congregate around stream mouths to prepare for their spawning migration into tributary streams.

Spin fishing works really well during the winter months. For the fly fishers, feeding activity is dominated by sub-surface techniques, so we fish streamers, nymphs and egg patterns. The occasional midge hatch will get fish looking up on calm days.

For those looking to get further afield or undertake multi-day fishing itineraries, we can take you to other lakes in Fiordland and explore some of the most beautiful winter fishing and scenery New Zealand has to offer.

Winter Walk-Wade Fishing

$995/ day for up to two anglers

Traditional walk-wade fishing is also available at several locations accessible via vehicle but it is more weather dependant than the boat fishing adventures. During the winter months we fish lake margins for cruising fish or we target brown trout in the lower reaches of our main rivers. During the annual whitebait run in August and September, we can experience exciting fishing for marauding sea trout in the estuaries and lower reaches of our larger river systems. These trips are only available as full days, given the distance required for travel.

Wilderness Heli-Fishing

$995 per day for up to two anglers excluding helicopter fees (starting at ~$3500/hr)

The majority of Fiordland western flowing rivers and streams remain open to fishing all year, so getting rugged up and adventuring into the wilderness with a fishing rod is a year round option in our region. Highly weather dependant and not for the faint hearted. These trips can be arranged under relatively short notice to get the best weather window.
